Hell's Gate

What is it?

Located just 50km from the Northern Territory border in the heart of the Gulf Country, Hell’s Gate roadhouse is your first or last stop as you traverse the famous Savannah Way – a classic trip from Cairns to Borolloola right across the top end.

History and Heritage

Hell’s Gate Roadhouse is located on Cliffdale Station – a cattle station established in 1959. A decade of low beef prices in the 1970s prompted the owners to establish the roadhouse to supplement their income, and offer a respite to travellers traversing the Savannah Way.

Roadhouse

Whether you stop for 5 minutes or stay several days, the roadhouse can provide what you need – from fuel, snacks, refreshments, meals or accommodation. Enjoy the hospitality that the outback is famous for!
